Just bandwidth issues? There are public archives up at the below URL, so I'm guessing it can't be a privacy thing. If you make the archives public (and follow what I think is a FAQ on the mailman site), the archive link will probably just work. http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ (2) Would it be okay if I subscribed the list to http://gmane.org and then got them the mbox archives from pipermail put up there? For a newsgroup name, I'm thinking gmane.comp.version-control.fossil-scm.users (3) Is there a "that's just too ugly" objection to just putting the correct link to the pipermail archives, perhaps as well as links to the main project page and the mail-archive.com archives (and the gmane archives if that happens), and a note saying "ignore the below link to archives, it's broken" as part of the "About" description in mailman? That field can actually take a pretty large subset of HTML, for an example see: http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/fsf-membercard-announce IMHO web interfaces are really awful for reading through an entire mailing list's history; NNTP clients are much nicer (hence the gmane request). Here is a one technique to get a mailing list archives in a local reader yourself; I used this for the current fossil-scm archives, and thought others might find useful. (a) Get the http://www.downthemall.net/ extension for icecat/iceweasel/firefox - it's esp. useful for sites that require login, where the usual tools like lftp don't tend to be easy to get working. (b) Go to the main page of the pipermail archive and use DownThemAll! to get the *.gz files. Note that at least in the case of fossil-scm these were actually not compressed when they got to the disk, although they still had the .gz extensions. (c) Import the mbox files into your mail reader; for Thunderbird, you can use the ImportExportTools plugin from http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html I also have a broader discussion topic about making discussion history part of a fossil-scm repository, but will address that in a separate email to be posted later :) BTW probably no surprise to anyone, but in going through the archives this was probably the most frequently asked question, followed by recursive checkins and file renaming; I have notes and tagged emails from that exercise, and am planning on writing a FAQ for fossil soon (I'm pretty sure I didn't see one, although Cookbook (which I recently added an apache2 config recipe to) was sort of like that; please tell me if I'm being blind).
