That's a good question. As it turns out, there is, though I never have BOM enabled (which, by the way, points out a bug in the "flexwiki" ftplugin file in vim!). However, that does not seem to be the problem, because I decided to wipe my local directory and re-clone the repo; and now, it works fine. Including the file-with-BOM in it. So I am more mystified than ever, but at least things do work properly. It might be worthwhile to try to figure out where a stray "<p>" tag might get inserted, say, in wikiformat.c or so.
