I would use zfs for that particular purpose. Specifically, HP Microservers with 8-16 GByte ECC memory, OmniOS http://omnios.omniti.com/ and napp-it http://www.napp-it.org/index_en.html , boot from internal USB, 4-6 SATA drives in a suitable pool configuration.
