With CSS3 it is possible, but that eliminates a wide range of older
browsers, as well as text-based ones (which was what i was mainly
thinking
about with this suggestion, as those don't support CSS-based spacing,
either).
Otherwise, I kind of like them both being there. Compare it
to a Fossil that does not have it:

The first one is much nicer/cleaner. How about we change the [R] from
black
to... something else? We've used all the primary colors already, though.
With the braces in place, subscripting might not even be necessary. Just
tried it in Chrome by changing a SUB to a SPAN. The SUB looks marginally
better, IMO.
