It could be that there's a conversion to a UNC path in there somewhere. If so, the name would be expanded to something like \\MYMACHINE\DRIVE\PATH\ON\THE\DRIVE and might exceed the Windows limits. Though I thought those limits had gone up to something around 1,000 characters (bytes?) when NTFS came along.
