Here's a summary of the differences between ckout/current:

'ckout' is, IIRC, only used when accessing the embedded docs, and it
provides the ability to preview the docs before checking them in.

'current' is used by the CLI commands and resolves to the currently
checked-out local copy. It might be used by some non-CLI commands/pages,
but none come to mind.
