Haha, well, it was a bit less glamorous than 8 months of investigations. :-) I was trying to get the stash-fixes branch ready to merge to trunk and the first thing I did was create an empty file, rename it, and then attempt to stash it. I got the assert and remembered that we hadn't yet solved the problem, primarily because nobody was ever able to reproduce it, so I dug up the old thread.
