I should add I only noticed the problem recently when I upgraded to Sierra.

I haven't installed 'brew or any other unix package manager, but I did
install the apple developer command line tools sans Xcode, but to no effect.

Miriams-MacBook-Pro:~ spdegabrielle$ gcc

xcrun: error: invalid active developer path
(/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools), missing xcrun at:
/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/xcrun

Miriams-MacBook-Pro:~ spdegabrielle$ xcode-select --install

xcode-select: note: install requested for command line developer tools

Miriams-MacBook-Pro:~ spdegabrielle$ gcc

clang: *error: *no input files
