Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with vmware to offer much help,
although as you say this problem also happens in slackware, then it's
more generic.
Of course you're doing an init_env, so that should not be it.
I'd try a make clean and run make again, but maybe someone else can
throw an idea in here...
