If you want to automate the process, you might look at the Unix program xwd.
It has a number of options such as grabbing screens from remote terminals
and capturing specific screen names without operator intervention. A shell
script could be built to do 'pref''s to bring up a whole directory of
displays and in between display callups to call xwd to capture the live
screen. The output is a Unix .xwd file which can be converted with a
utility. I have used the 'convert' tool in imagemagic to convert to a .jpg
file but I forget where I got imagemagic. There are probably others.

To capture a remote image you would have a line that looks something like:

/usr/openwin/bin/xwd -display FOX001:0.0 -name 'FOXBORO: Display Manager
02AW01:02AW1A' > foo.xwd

Then convert foo.xwd into your final file format. For imagemagic it looks
like:

convert foo.xwd jpg:foo.jpg

The -display option in xwd is the name of the remote station and display.
The -name option is the same as the name that appears at the top of the
screen that you want to capture.
