The error message is referring to the chgrp command (man chgrp).
Is there something strange about the /etc/groups file (i.e. non-standard) ?
How is the /opt partition mounted ?
You mention doing something in single user mode. DId you boot
up in single user mode and write files to /opt before it was mounted ?
And now those files are covered up with the 'real /opt' ?
Are you installing this stuff as root ?
Just some questions to help decipher the problem.
