Good luck with your search. You'll find that, once it's in your mind you won't 
be able to travel without looking at every venue you pass as an opportunity!

The other thing that happens with some is that every time you see a local 
newspaper, magazine etc is that you scan it for ads, articles, mentions of 
restaurants, businesses, celebrations, opportunities, leads, ideas ...... I get 
about 10% of my new work this way .. and each single lead can become a lifetime 
of further contacts.

About "working up courage" .... if you need more help on this, just let me 
know. I can help with what to do and say and what to avoid too. Everything from 
approach through presentation, selling, negotiating and what's called 'closing' 
and contracts. I can also help with any nerves and fears... I have a GREAT 
exercise anyone can and should use if they get nervous in any situation. It 
totally calms and build massive confidence and strength so you actually feel 
great in the situation, not timid.

Thanks so much for the info, John.  I've been scoping out resaurants for a 
while around here.  I'm sure I'll find one eventually.  Then I'll have to work 
up the courage to approach them.  I really appreciate all the knowledge that is 
so freely shared here.

Getting work in restaurants is a simple process:
 
i) Find a restaurant with a need (a pain, a problem)
 
ii) Determine how you can solve that need (heal their pain, scratch their itch))

iii) Contact them to tell them you have a solution
 
iv) Meet to sell your solution
 
Yes, I know that sounds simple but of course it may not be that easy.
 
Firstly, many people think that a restaurant will hire them because they are 
good?
Why should they? They are not a showcase venue for talent ... they have a 
business to run! And that's why you need to find venues with'problems'.
 
This could be one or more of several things:
~ Not enough covers
~ Trade patch through the week
~ Busy but kitchen can't keep up
~ They want more family trade at weekends
~ Losing customers to competitors
.... and so on. 
 
IF you are able to demonstrate that you have a solution to these, and that by 
hiring you their bottom line increases by more than your fee ... that's a 
perfect starting point for discussion.
 
How you actually approach a venue and handle it from there is another number 
.... maybe for another post. But what you don't do (unless they are actively 
looking for a painter) is to pop in and say "Hi ... I'm a face painter and I'd 
love to work here!". They'll want to know "WIIFM?"
