My 8 year-old son is interested in getting a pair of stilts. I heard
that Warner drywall stilts were good ones for our budget. I've seen
them for $175 and less. I prefer to spend around $100...but not more
than $200. My son is pretty tall for his age and very physically
coordinated...has good balance. He is not at all interested in stilts
that are made for kids, like those wooden hand-held ones that are a
few inches off the ground. He has the heart of an entertainer and
wants to learn everything. I would not be surprised at all if he
ended up as a party entertainer before he's even a teenager. He
already does basic balloon twisting and temporary tattoos.

Does anyone have any advice as far as brands or types of stilts for a
kid? I saw some on ebay for less than $100...surely a knock-off from
Asia...but maybe good enough quality for someone who won't be spending
a lot of time on them.

My main concerns are that I want something that is less than $200, at
least 15" with expandability, durable enough to last at least a couple
of years, and something that is relatively safe. I understand that
it's safer to have stilts that only have bars on the exterior of the
thighs, but are there any other safety concerns as far as design?

He's already talking about costumes, which I think I can make. But
he's also talking about shoes to go over the stilt feet. Does that
even exist?

I really appreciate any advice. I know this is a face and body art
forum, but I figured there have to be some stilt-walkers out there who
might be able to advice a newbie stilt-kid.

I'd also be interested in finding out if there are any camps or
intensive workshops that would accomodate an 8 year-old who wants to
learn magic, juggling, and/or stilt-walking.

Thanks,
~Erika
