The challenge is finding the right mix. Speed is relative. Those in the trenches can pull off a very nice Spiderman, Butterfly, skull or tiger in 2 to 3 minutes. If you are taking double that then I would question your methods. Try to make sure you are using good sponges, good brushes and keep the maximum number of colors to three or four. No doubt being the fastest full face painter in the world (literally) I have proven I can paint a full face in 16.5 seconds (with 3 colors). Then again I would be ashamed to put a single of those faces on my business card. I can do a 60 second Spiderman, butterfly, skull or tiger but I tell you the results are less than my personal minimum expectations. I want the child to have a beaming smile when I hold up the mirror. For this to happen consistently, I need to put at least 2.5 to 3 minutes into the face. Add to that when I get to over 30 faces per hour it becomes a job over having fun face painting (while I earn good money). I hate painting 30+ faces per hour all day. I can do it but I do not enjoy it. If I average 3.5 minutes per face then I can be more creative, chat it up with the kids and enjoy my work. I then love my job and also the tips more than make up for the loss of that 30 to 60 seconds. One has to find the proper balance. Narrow down your selection of faces to your top 12 until you can easily average under 5 minutes.
