Hi --today I did 22 full faces in an hour and was not stressed at all. This is a personal best for me, but one of my painters regularly does this at the same mall event. However, I will say, that I do not post boards, I use rainbow cakes a lot, and I do chat the kids up while I am painting. I find that the use of boards hurts the fast painting, since the moms will often say, "could you add this star or this swirl, like the picture in the book?" I find a simple list works for them, and then I change the details up as the line gets shorter. Less kids, more detail. Not significantly so...since I want everyone to feel good about the details they got, but perhaps an extra color, or glitter on the lips if I have more time.
For butterflies, ask them their two favorite colors, make the blending those colors plus a third one add your lines in black or white, and then shadow or highlight with the opposite one. You will find that a simple tiger can look mean or friendly, depending on the strategic placement of a few line s and the shape of the teeth. You don't need tow different tigers for the kids to choose from. Long lines make for speedier painters...so it is all good...but don't sacrifice quality for speed...you will end up hurting your reputation in the end.
