This is quite common with all touchstrip sensors - laptop manufacturers are
very skilled to position them so that it is very uncomfortable to swipe the
finger. One thing stock libfprint lacks is the ability to store multiple
scans of each finger. Which would allow to store a number of somewhat
different scans of the same finger to coexist so that you have a better
change to score a match whichever way you manage to swipe your finger this
particular time.

This is not an anwer to your question and as such is quite useless. Still,
this is a valid topic for the mailing list (although it has been touched
multiple times)...
