The reason for the failure is because the device is not actually a DigitalPersona device. It's made by a company called Validity.
The USB VendorID 0x138a is assigned to Validity. Check this: http://www.reactivated.net/fprint/wiki/Unsupported_devices#Validity_VFS101 And they don't provide tech specs without NDA (which costs $$$).
