I can't speak for others but I believe that ANY public financial support for ANY private school is generally bad Public Policy.
However, education for all children is an important societal goal. So, in specific cases some support may be warranted. One would need to know detailed information such as how many students attended on scholarships, and what contributions or services to the general community were made or provided by the organization. This could be a very complicated question based upon each individual case. Joel A. Orr Sent: Friday, February 07, 2003 10:57 AM To: Peter Sellers Cc: Town Meeting Members; Framingham Neighbors; Harold J. Wolfe Subject: Question about plowing the churches. Forgive me for CC'ing a few extra people but this question strikes me as somewhat important, especially in light of the budget cuts that were laid out at last night's BoS meeting. Harold Wolfe got up (in his inimitable style) and pointed out that the 22 churches in town are all plowed, sanded and salted by the DPW and have been for all eternity. Given the state of our finances, not to mention the issue of mixing State and religion, I'm asking that we cease this practice immediately. The Town of Ashland was just hit by the ACLU for this very issue. It's just plain unfair to all of us atheists and zoroastrians. I didn't intend for this message to go out while it's actually snowing, but I guess that issue was decided by a higher power than myself :-) Can you please let us know what happens to this issue?
