Hi Peter

I gathered from Steve's second email that he was trying to change a user
variable not a system variable, because he said it was "a document version
number". But anyway, I just tried this:

<MIFFile 7.00> # Generated by FrameMaker 7.0p578
<VariableFormats
 <VariableFormat
  <VariableName `Current Page #'>
  <VariableDef `test'>
 > # end of VariableFormat
> # end of VariableFormats
# End of MIFFile

and it changed the page number to "test".

Cheers, Rebecca

Rebecca:

Have you had similar success with system variables? I seem to recall
that my quick test didn't work for a system variable.

Steve:

I'm not sure if you understood that you can find/replace on master
pages, by performing find/replace with master page view active.
