They are unique Series labels that identify the paragraphs that are the part
of the same numbered flow. The "N" indicates that all the paragraph tags
titled "StepNumber" are to be part of the same flow and the "L" indicates
that all paragraph tags titled "StepLetter" are to be part of the same flow.
It keeps the related tags together and keeps the numbering correct as a
result. In FM's Online Help, serach for Series Label for the full blown
detail. I don't see any series Label in your definitions, so FM can't
properly number your steps.

Thanks for the quick reply, Amy. Here are the identifiers I am using:

Numbered1 <n=1>.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered)
Numbered <n+>.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered)
List (a) <a=1>)\t with NextParagraph set to List (b,c...)
List (b,c...) <a+>)\t with NextParagraph set to List (b,c...)

What do N: and L: mean in your identifiers?

Thanks!
Ed

Ed,

First, what is the identifier that you use for the numbered steps and
the
letter steps? The two different numbering sequences should have
different
auto-identifiers. Here is the setup that I use and I can get your
desired
results just fine:

StepNumberBegin - N:<n=1 >.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepNumberedContinued
StepNumberContinued - N:<n+>.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepNumberContinued
StepLetterBegin - L:<n=a >.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepLetterContinued
StepLetterContinued - L: :<n+>.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepLetterContinued

Subject: Auto-Numbering Problem

Hi, Frame Experts.

I am using the following auto-numbering scheme and can get the
"numbering" to pick up where it left off after using auto-numbers a),
b), c),... Here is an example of what I get:

1. First step...

2. Second step...

3. Third step...

a) First substep

b) Second substep

c) Third substep

       5. (Should be 4th step)

What can I do?

Thanks,
