Rick, The $ in a formula fixes a location. So, if you want to always use the same column but allow dynamic relative reassignment of the row, you'd refer to cell B3 as $B3. Likewise, if you want the column to be relative and the row fixed, it would be B$3; and if you want both column and row identifiers fixed, it would be $B$3.
