With The Gimp, I believe the technique described here would work: http://www.sxc.hu/blog/post/1165. Rather than deleting the second half of the image, one could move it off to one side or to a separate layer, I suspect, and then, when done with the first half, apply similar edge-effect technique to the second half, and then bring/merge the altered sides back together to the extent desired.
