Yep, I participated in the "beta testing" for the most recent version of BookVars, which works with FrameMaker 2015, and manages markers as well (although I haven't tried that part yet).

And yes, BookVars is why I'm not minding a proliferation of variables in my docs :-).

You might also want to look at using the popular BookVars plugin. It
lets you easily define a set of variables (one for each product), then
pop them into the book with a couple of clicks. It's easy and a real
timesaver.
