I might be going back too far in the annals of FrameMaker history, but I recall that one of the reasons to ensure that Adobe PDF was the printer selected was to make sure that everything looked the same on screen as it would ultimately appear in the PDF, as the font information used in the display was somewhat dependent upon the print driver selected. At least at one point, depending on the printer you had selected, having the printer not being Adobe PDF was a Bad Thing(tm).
