Actually, all of you are wrong. This cable can likely connect to a lot of things, including RS-485 devices if it has the usual RJ-45 Ethernet plug on the business end. If so, it can easily be connected to other devices, such as standard Ethernet switches and routers, but it would not function properly. Even if it has another type of connector, it's probably better to just describe what to do with it.
Assuming you're writing this sentence as a step in a series of instructions, just say this: "Cable X should be connected to the RS-485 port on Device Y." If you just want to describe the nature of the cable, then try this: "This is an RS-485 signal cable." In either example above, it's clear that the cable and the signal on it complies with the RS-485 standard at least well enough to function properly. Dennis ...
