Hi Dan, If you use the Publish option, you can select Use Acrobat Distiller for PDF generation on the General tab of the PDF settings file. You are having the exact OPPOSITE problem of what I am having w/ a current FM book. It absolutely dies and dies hard when using Distiller, but does just fine using the Publish option w/out Acrobat Distiller being selected. And this was a book file that for years generated flawlessly through Acrobat Distiller so initially, I thought I had the problem figured out between Acrobat Distiller and the FM publish to PDF option, but not anymore. . .

FrameMaker 17.0.4.628 on Windows 11. I'm "old school" in that printing to distiller works for print purposes, so have exclusively used that method, partially because I find the Publish workflow/methods to be nonintuitive AF. I'm running into a problem where a given chapter PDF renders (visually, I'm not talking about tagging or accessibility purposes right now) perfectly fine when printed through distiller. When I use File > Publish and use the PDF preset, the rendered PDF is missing text elements throughout the entire PDF. Elements using certain paragraph styles and character styles are just not included. I cannot for the life of me figure out where this is controlled. It doesn't appear to be in the "Style Mapping" tab of the PDF settings (which appears to be primarily for HTML and other formats anyway). Where is this configured? Is it a setting at the paragraph or character style level, or within global FrameMaker settings, Publish settings?
