Your problem may well have been using a safelight at all with Tri-X: https://www.kodak.com/content/products-brochures/Film/TRI-X-7266-Technical-Data-EN.pdf
Note on page 1: “No safelight is recommended until after the stop bath. Unprocessed films must be handled in total darkness.” While Tri-X is B&W, it’s also panchromatic, which means there aren’t safe wavelengths of light to use while processing. FYI, R.
