*ATLAS VARIATIONS: THE MOVING-IMAGE WORK OF CHARLES ATLAS*
FILMMAKER IN PERSON! Charles Atlas will be here in person for most if not
all of the screenings!
Anthology is overjoyed to present a major survey – throughout May and June
– of the moving-image work of the one-and-only Charles Atlas. An
exceptionally prolific, protean, and inventive artist, Atlas has
collaborated for the past fifty years with an extraordinary array of
choreographers, dancers, musicians, actors, and performance artists, and
has himself occupied a crucial role at the intersection of the worlds of
art, film, video, performance, dance, and installation. During the course
of his career, he has pioneered the medium of videodance, documented the
nightlife and performance scenes of New York City throughout the past
several decades, and created some of the most inspired works of
installation art in recent memory. Arguably no other single figure has
contributed as substantially to so many of the most advanced and important
currents in American culture since the 1970s, both as a chronicler,
collaborator, and creator.

Atlas’s films and videos have taken so many forms and involved so many
collaborations that his moving-image career can only be conveyed through a
large-scale series. Indeed, even this 10-program survey represents a
partial retrospective: since Anthology focused on Atlas’s seminal
collaborations with Merce Cunningham (with whom he collaborated on numerous
films beginning in 1975) during our Cunningham centennial screenings in
2019, we’ve chosen to focus on Atlas’s other collaborations and solo works
here. Encompassing some of his best-known works (including *THE LEGEND OF
LEIGH BOWERY*, *HAIL THE NEW PURITAN*, *SUPERHONEY*, and so on), as well as
more rarely-screened pieces such as the various *“MARTHA” TAPES*, his early
films *MAYONNAISE*, *#1* (1972) and *NEVADA* (1974), his ad campaign for
Calvin Klein, and his stereoscopic film *TESSERACT 3D* (2017), this survey
demonstrates the embarrassment of riches contained within Atlas’s
dizzyingly inventive and ever-morphing body of work.

“Collaboration is a major aspect of Atlas’s expansive practice. He has
collaborated with important figures from the worlds of dance, art,
performance, music and theater, including Michael Clark, Merce Cunningham,
Leigh Bowery, John Kelly, Marina Abramovic, Anohni, Yvonne Rainer, Fennesz,
New Humans (Mika Tajima and Howie Chen), Karole Armitage and Bill Irwin.
For Atlas, the theatricality of dance and performance is a point of inquiry
into artifice, fiction and reality. After first working in film, Atlas was
a pioneer of videodance, collaborating on performance works created
specifically for the two-dimensional space, intimate scale and temporality
of video. His groundbreaking early works…evolved from a unique
collaboration with Merce Cunningham, for whose dance company he was
filmmaker-in-residence from 1975 to 1983. Since then, Atlas has worked on
numerous international productions for television with choreographers,
artists and musicians. In these extravagantly stylized ‘documentary
fictions,’ Atlas manifests his fascination with what he terms ‘narrative,
psychology, dance and flights of fantasy.’ Typified by a provocative,
postmodern performance sensibility and an ironic urban insouciance, Atlas’s
works transform performances into vivid time capsules of contemporary
culture.” –ELECTRONIC ARTS INTERMIX

Co-organized and co-presented by Electronic Arts Intermix; special thanks
to Rebecca Cleman & Karl McCool. Unless otherwise noted, all the individual
film descriptions are from the Electronic Arts Intermix catalogue.

Parrinella, two friends and filmmakers who don't get to see each other
often enough. A chance to weave a conversation through the moving image,
this program is a selection of digital video and 16mm film works by artist
filmmakers working today, including Zack and Anna.

*A Synesthete’s Atlas: Cartographic Improvisations between Eric Theise,
Krispen Hartung, and Aaron Davis*
Real-time cartographic improvisations using projected, manipulated digital
maps by Eric Theise in collaboration with Krispen Hartung guitar, and Aaron
Davis, keyboard. A visual wash of street grids, land masses, water bodies,
and curiosities from built and natural environments. Orphaned labels.
Auditory roundabouts. Free-floating symbology. Saturated colors and the
subtlest of tints. Jittery zooms, pans, and traversals. Acoustic
cul-de-sacs and glitches in crowdsourced data.

*A Synesthete's Atlas* has been described as truly radical cartography, as
well as pre-, post-, and anti-cinema. Since its Lisbon premiere in 2022,
Theise has given 30+ performances of A Synesthete's Atlas across North
America, manipulating projected digital maps in collaboration with
improvising musicians. He lifts strategies from experimental film, the
Light and Space movement, 60's light shows, and visual poetry to pursue his
interests in perceptual pleasure and fatigue, and in questioning the
objectivity and authority of maps. Based in San Francisco, his animated If
Map #5 looped, eight stories high, atop Salesforce Tower throughout
February 2024.

This performance will last ~30 minutes and will occasionally introduce
strobing effects that may affect photosensitive viewers.

Krispen Hartung, guitarist, producer, and founder and director of the Boise
Experimental Music Festival (2008-2014), has been involved in the Boise, ID
music scene for over 35 years and his most recent efforts have focused
primarily on raising awareness and appreciation of experimental and
improvised music in the Treasure Valley.

Aaron Davis (keyboard) is an experimental luthier, tool maker, and
intermediate misanthrope, Aaron Davis was classically trained on piano as a
child but eventually took an interest in improvisational rock and
experimental music

1000 Fifth Ave, New York, NY
*Short Films for Short Nights*
A program of film screenings with live music.

With the advent of cinema came new ways of experiencing and representing
modern life. Join The Met’s Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern
Art for a three-part series featuring dozens of experimental short films
made between 1909 and 1969 that collectively delve into the creative
process. "Program One, Images," explores two-dimensional surfaces through
films that have been incised, painted, tinted, cut, or collaged; "Program
Two, Objects," features films about sculpture and inanimate figures; and
"Program Three, Collections," considers art and objects in museums,
galleries, archives, and studios to think about the sites of culture
cinematically.

--- Program One: Images - Friday, June 28, 2024, 7pm ET ---
Modern artists invented new forms of image-making, from photography, to
papier-collé, to gestural painting, and these techniques influenced cinema
in turn. This program explores images and their surfaces through films that
have been incised, painted, tinted, cut, or collaged. It also includes
films that create after-images in the retina, treating the eye itself as a
surface for composition.

--- Program Two: Objects - Saturday, June 29, 2024, 7pm ET ---
In the hands of modern artists, sculpture was loosed from its pedestal and
freed from representing the human form. Filmmakers captured sculptors at
work but also experimented with object-making themselves via animation.
Mannequins and dolls became subjects of fascination, as directors tried to
grapple with the enigmatic and disconcerting nature of inanimate figures.
This program includes films that depict or contain volumetric forms.

curiosity, and from library to museum.

*EC: WARHOL / WATSON & WEBBER / WHITNEY*

Andy Warhol
*EAT* (1963, 35 min, 16mm, silent)
“A portrait of artist Robert Indiana, EAT is one of the classics of
Warhol’s minimalist cinema. As Indiana slowly eats one mushroom, the action
is rendered mysterious by Warhol’s decision to assemble the rolls out of
order, so the mushroom appears to magically renew itself from time to
time.” –Callie Angell

James Sibley Watson & Melville Webber
*FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER* (1928, 13 min, 16mm, silent)
“Filmed in a Rochester, New York, carriage house, this expressionist film
is the earliest live-action dramatic film made by a collaboration of poets
and artists in the United States. Watson devised the optical effects that
distinguish the film, while Webber provided its visual design, based upon
medieval frescoes.” –Robert A. Haller

John & James Whitney
*FILM EXERCISES 1-5* (1943-45, 18 min, 16mm)
“The visual images in these films were created by shining light through
flexible masks, so that the camera was filming direct light rather than
light reflected from drawings. The results seem like dazzling neon
apparitions, that were as novel and shocking as the accompanying
soundtrack.” –William Moritz

James Whitney
*LAPIS* (1963-66, 10 min, 16mm)
“The most elaborate example of a mandala in cinema. It utilizes a field of
tiny dots, symmetrically organized in hundreds of very fine concentric
rings, to generate slowly changing intricate patterns…. Both structurally
and visually LAPIS conforms to the circular form of the mandala; its
elaborate movements belie a fundamental stasis.” –P. Adams Sitney

Total running time: ca. 80 min.

Founded in 2009, the Festival of (In)appropriation is a preeminent
international showcase for experimental, found-media film and video. Every
year, the Festival attracts artists working across an astonishing array of
moving-image formats while probing the limits of collage, machinima,
re-mix, détournement, mash-up, and more. The raw material for their work
derives from the abundant new sources of audiovisual media to have surfaced
in recent decades, from official state and commercial archives to
vernacular collections, home movie repositories, and digital databases of
every stripe.

By exploiting and refashioning these pre-existing materials, such creations
generate novel juxtapositions and recombinations, often producing ideas and
meanings that were unintended or unimagined by the original makers. These
remarkable works, in other words, are “inappropriate” in the profoundest
sense of the term.

Sponsored by Los Angeles Filmforum, the Festival of (In)appropriation
strives to evince the remarkable range, sophistication, and critical impact
of this vital aesthetic practice.

The 2023 edition – Festival #13 – is curated by Jaimie Baron, Jennifer
Proctor, and Adam Sekuler.
