*BODY PROP by M Woods w/ COIN CELLEIL at Peripheries 2024 | Hosted at Sweet
Void*
Sweet Void Cinema will be screening a radical double feature with the cult
omnibus film *COIN CELLEIL* opening for the world premiere of M. Woods' 3rd
feature film *BODY PROP*.

6:30PM - *COIN CELLEIL* by Various Artists (2023), an omnibus remake of
Chris Marker's *Sans Soleil*. It was originally shared as a series of reels
on the instagram account @coincellpro7 Follow @coincelhoe

8:30PM - *BODY PROP* by M. Woods (2024) 75’, an avant-garde essay film and
attack against the ontology of white imperialism. Made of mostly
hand-processed super 8mm film, 16mm, and archival video. The piece, in five
movements, takes on the subject of the Body as a prop, as a body politic,
as a simulation, and as a necropolitical expense, creating a “Cadaver
Decomposition Island” of discarded scraps of Super 8 and archival material
to reveal the shadow of US nihilism within the advanced stage of
hyperreality.

Combining original manifestoes (in the style of Situationism) with excerpts
of Jean Baudrillard’s *A System of Objects*, Sartre’s *Being and
Nothingness* and other treatises on phenomenological existentialism,
Biblical passages from Genesis and Ecclesiastes, impeachment transcripts,
*Beloved* by Toni Morrison, the speeches of Malcolm X, YouTube news
archives, and dozens of other texts in conversation in a tumult of signs,
oscillating in a trance between attempting to situate within and
disassociate from the Body Prop. The cinema itself is a Body Prop -
simultaneously full and devoid of feeling and senses. Featuring an original
score composed of Hip-Hop beats and soundscapes created by director M Woods.

Select movements from *Body Prop* have been screened internationally
including at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, VideoEx,
Peripheries Experimental Film & Video Festival, the Ann Arbor Film
Festival, and the Athens International Film and Video Festival. WARNING: *Body
Prop* contains accounts and representations of racism, violence, sex, and
nudity. Parts of this work are based on actual events. Some parts contain
fast edits and strobing imagery and that may negatively impact those
viewers with epilepsy and other light-sensitive disorders.

*PSYCHO-GEO: SF*
HOWZE on SCOTT WILLIAMS + KPR + WILEY +
The first of three *Focus-on-Locus* shows in fact addresses our own
situation here in the Bay Area, with a special section devoted to dear
departed Scott Williams, long-time denizen of 20th St. in the Inner
Mission. One of the greatest stencil artists of our times, Scott passed
away in June, leaving behind a true Mission School legacy of obsessively
worked paintings--in books, on buildings, in frames, and on the
streets. Russell (*Stencil Nation)* Howze situates Scott's *oeuvre *within
the energized NorCal art-scene of the last half-century, sharing clips
from Nick Gorski's *Spray Paint* and Carla Leshne's *Carmanic Convergence*.
ALSO Arlin Golden is in the house with his hilarious *Backyard*, to anchor
a set of short docs on our Fair City: the Fillingers' *Interchange*
, Attell's *Fun House*, and Oakland's *Down to Earth*, on sustainable
collective living. AND speaking of utopian projects in the East Bay,
tonight's real revelation is a 10-min. prime cut from a larger W-i-P by
consummate film artist Ken Paul Rosenthal. PLUS Emeryville
MudFlats, William Wiley's billboard art, and free postcards!

*SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2024* Venue type: *Live, physical event*

7pm PST,

*When It Was Blue - Dual-projection 16mm film by Jennifer Reeves*
This double-projection 16mm film rejoices the splendor of seasons,
landscapes and wildlife as we traverse past land and ocean. An elaborate
montage connects diverse ecosystems spanning from the northeastern USA, to
Iceland, Canada's Pacific coast, New Zealand, and Central America. Reeves
hand-painted the 16mm film, creating impressionistic textures and colors
that mimic the qualities of land, water and trees, and fuse with the
photographic imagery. A frenetic, delighted and mournful visual journey
ensues through decades and seasons, as if trying to "capture" as much of
the natural world as possible before it disappears. The accompanying score,
an emotive and haunting composition by Skúli Sverrisson, brings the
internal human experience to this breathtaking vast world away from home.

*When It Was Blue *(2008) by NY-based filmmaker Jennifer Reeves is an ode
to nature and 16mm film as they rapidly vanish.

Discovering Futuristic Tools for Animating
- Artist Talk | Workshop by Nick Fox-Gieg -

Join us at PIX FILM Gallery on Tuesday Octobre 01, 2024 from 6:30 -9-30pm

Nick Fox-Gieg will immerse us and guide us through experiments in drawing
with XR and independent forms of presentations in Augmented Reality. In
this beginner-friendly workshop for visual artists with no prior coding
experience, we'll learn how to create a single-serving XR website for
phones and tablets. We'll be using the collaborative coding platform
Glitch, the open source A-Frame library, and basic HTML to take our own 3D
artwork and place it at a location in the real world.

(We encourage participants to bring their own computer)

*EC: MAYA DEREN*
All films in this program have been preserved by Anthology Film Archives.

*MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON *(1943, 14 min, 16mm, b&w. Co-directed by
Alexander Hammid. Music by Teiji Ito from 1959.)
*AT LAND *(1944, 15 min, 16mm, b&w, silent. Photographed by Hella Heyman
and Alexander Hammid.)
*A STUDY IN CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CAMERA *(1945, 3 min, 16mm, b&w, silent. By
Maya Deren and Talley Beatty.)
*RITUAL IN TRANSFIGURED TIME *(1946, 15 min, 16mm, b&w, silent.
Choreographic collaboration with Frank Westbrook. Photographed by Hella
Heyman. With Rita Christiani and Frank Westbrook.)

“*MESHES* is, one might say, almost expressionist; it externalizes an inner
world to the point where it is confounded with the external one. *AT LAND* has
little to do with the inner world of the protagonist, it externalizes the
hidden dynamics of the external world, and here the drama results from the
activity of the external world. It is as if I had moved from a concern with
the life of a fish, to a concern with the sea which accounts for the
character of the fish and its life. And *RITUAL* pulls back even further,
to a point of view from which the external world itself is but an element
in an entire structure and scheme of metamorphosis: the sea itself changes
because of the larger changes of the earth. *RITUAL* is about the nature
and process of change.” –Maya Deren

*EC: CAVALCANTI / CROCKWELL*

Alberto Cavalcanti *RIEN QUE LES HEURES / NOTHING BUT THE HOURS *1926, 52
min, 35mm
One of the very first “city symphonies,” this film interweaves documentary,
experimental, and narrative elements that together provide vivid images of
Paris in the mid-1920s. The Brazilian-born Cavalcanti was at the time a
central figure of the French avant-garde, but his fascinating career would
later find him making pioneering documentaries for John Grierson’s GPO Film
Unit in the UK in the 1930s, dramas, noirs, and musicals for Ealing Studios
throughout the 1940s, and finally a wide array of films in Brazil, East
Germany, France, and Israel in the years before his death in 1982.

Douglass Crockwell *GLENS FALLS SEQUENCE* (1946, 8 min, 16mm)
Douglass Crockwell *THE LONG BODIES* (1947, 6 min, 16mm)
Both films preserved by Anthology Film Archives.
“The basic idea was to paint continuing pictures on various layers with
plastic paint, adding at times and removing at times, and to a certain
extent these early attempts were successful.” –Douglass Crockwell

*KILL YR LANDLORDS SHORT FILM PROGRAM*
Three San Francisco legends, eviction hovering over each, in resignation,
desperation, organization. Eviction is the reason for the removal of
Bay-area artist Jay DeFeo’s one-ton, mattress-sized painting “The White
Rose,” filmed by Bruce Conner; it’s the reason that might motivate one of
the characters in Christopher Maclaine’s *THE END* to kill his landlord;
and the reason for the fight documented and contextualized by Curtis
Choy’s *THE
FALL OF THE I-HOTEL*. From another angle, all three films are about the
indignity of not having a place, literal or metaphorical, in the world,
that can’t be taken from you.

Bruce Conner *THE WHITE ROSE* 1967, 7 min, 35mm
Curtis Choy *THE FALL OF THE I-HOTEL* 1983, 59 min, 16mm-to-digital
Christopher Maclaine *THE END* 1953, 35 min, 16mm. Preserved by Anthology
Film Archives.
