*WANDERING WOMEN*
“I think a lot of people are that way. I think millions of people are that
way. Not just women, but men too. They don’t know why they exist and they
have no direction in their life. They have no reason for existing. (You see
these people like Wanda and Mr. Dennis are not – they are not aware of
their condition as maybe better educated people would be. They’re not aware
of the situation they’re in.)” –Barbara Loden, on *WANDA*

“*WANDA* is a movie about ‘someone’. […] ‘When I say someone, I mean
someone who has been isolated, someone who has been considered on himself,
separated from social conditions where he is. Like extracted from society
and observed by you. I think there is always something in the self, in you,
that society cannot reach, something insurmountable, impenetrable and
decisive.” –Marguerite Duras, on *WANDA*

Barbara Loden’s *WANDA* explores the phenomenon of wandering, which is both
the movement of an anonymous identity, without purpose, aimless, seeking
something abstract, but which also represents a kind of questioning – not
actively critical, but rather a form of existential interrogation of
oneself through the environment being traversed. The gender dimension
amplifies this questioning. It’s no wonder that the image of a wandering
woman should emerge as a major metaphor within the cinema of the 1960s and
70s: in the midst of a cultural and sexual revolution, this figure comes to
embody the question of what to do with this newfound “freedom” when women’s
role in society remained unresolved and undefined outside of the domestic
sphere.

The films in this series track the development of this motif in global
cinema from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. The protagonists of these films
rupture the usual ambivalence between feminine/passive and masculine/active
roles. Whether helmed by women (Loden, Chantal Akerman, Ulrike Ottinger,
etc) or men (Ken Loach, Ousmane Sembène, Masao Adachi, and so on), their
trajectories complicate the “male gaze,” as we as viewers feel intimately
connected to them, constantly wondering about their wandering: What do they
want? Where would that take them? How do they feel?

These roving women are largely unburdened by possessions, carrying only
their child, a hotel room key, a backpack, a handbag that will soon be
stolen, or a mask – a relic of a stolen identity. They have too many drinks
and meet strangers who they will fall for or forget, fight or befriend,
hitch a ride from, or make love with for the sake of the sexual revolution.
Yet, they glide like oil on water, sometimes drawing attention but without
altering the space, without making history. It’s through this drifting,
like a quiet cry for help, that they open a space to reflect on the
situation of women, on the experience of inhabiting an indifferent
environment – built by men, for men. They testify to our contemporary time
of uncertainty, underscoring – like an echo – the mobility of those who
have no choice but to be in movement.

“Wandering Women” is guest-programmed by Nina Verneret, who also wrote the
introduction and, unless otherwise noted, the individual film descriptions.

*Experimentations 15: This Bit of That India*
Experimentations: Imag(in)ing Knowledge in Film, program 15. In-person:
Curator Shai Heredia. The history of experimental film in India is tied to
the history of India’s quest for modernity and is particularly visible in
the experimental films on science and technology produced by the Films
Division of India during the cultural revolution of the late 60’s and early
70’s.
This program will showcase a selection of these avant-garde state supported
films that reflect the radical values, perspectives and ideas that shaped
the vision of Indian democracy. These films remind us of the complexity of
early post-colonial Indian modernism as was illustrated in scientist Homi
Bhabha’s legendary statement, “It is true that India neither produced the
motorcar, the refrigerator, the airplane. Nor did it manufacture these in
the overwhelming quantities of other industrialized countries. But for
hundreds of years when the Indian peasant did not have to work, he sat in
the shade of a tree and thought. He thought the philosophy of truth in
life, and he thought as an artist in action.” – Shai Heredia

*WEEGEE'S CAMERA MAGIC*
To celebrate Anthology’s brand-new preservations of five short films by the
legendary photographer Weegee, and on the occasion of the International
Center of Photography’s exhibition, “Weegee: Society of the Spectacle”,
Anthology and ICP co-present the film series, “Weegee’s Camera Magic”. This
program brings together the newly-preserved films, his most famous
moving-image work WEEGEE’S NEW YORK, and a selection of other films that
Weegee participated in, as actor, consultant, special effects designer, or
set photographer.

Arthur Fellig (1899-1968), known to the world as “Weegee”, was among the
most unusual of American photographers and artists. Notorious for his crime
photography, Weegee spent the 1930s and 40s depicting the seedy underbelly
of New York City, generating vivid, gut-wrenching, and frankly sensational
images of crime scenes, police activity, and the down-and-out. Exposed to a
wide audience through his legendary photo book, “Naked City”, these images
flew in the face of the comparatively staid “art photography” of the time.
As Weegee’s fame grew, he increasingly turned his attention on Hollywood,
documenting the celebrities, premiere events, and larger ecology of the
movie industry, while also indulging his interest in developing
expressionistically surreal camera techniques to create bizarrely
manipulated images of reality. By the 1950s he had begun utilizing these
techniques within his burgeoning interest in 16mm cinematography. While
Weegee’s body of photographic work has long been celebrated, his 16mm
experimental films of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s are virtually unknown – a
situation that’s poised to change thanks to our new preservations.

On view at ICP from January 23-May 5, 2025, “Weegee: Society of the
Spectacle” aims to reconcile the two sides of Weegee through an
investigation of his focus, throughout his career, on a critique of 20th
century popular culture and its insatiable appetite for spectacle. The
exhibition is curated by Clément Chéroux, Director of the Fondation Henri
Cartier-Bresson (FHCB), Paris, in collaboration with the Weegee Archive at
the International Center of Photography (ICP), New York. For more info

*All That Glitters*
The Emerging Eye Network was founded in 2023 by filmmakers to promote
low-threshold exchange and the further development of their own moving
image work.

Once a month, members meet in different studios to
present their work-in-progress projects, talk about ongoing funding
applications, and receive constructive feedback.

With "All that Glitters," the network is presenting a selection of short
films by its members for the first time. The short film program brings
together individual artistic positions that reflect experimental extensions
of the documentary genre.

Participating artists: Veneta Androva, Jessica Arseneau, Elisa Jule Braun,
Marlene Denningmann, Vanessa Gravenor, Zeno Gries, Laura Leppert, Miljana
Nikovic, Nicolás Rupcich, Stefanie Schwarzwimmer, Stefania Smolkina, Tsai,
I-Chieh

Based on the phrase "All that glitters is not gold," the films ask for
other observations of today's reality conditions in the hope of a new
dissemination of these very terms

*Experimental Karaoke with Roger Beebe & Friends*
Experimental film chameleon Roger Beebe returns to Shapeshifters with guest
VJ Jesse Malmed for an evening of experimental karaoke. The selections run
from classic karaoke jams (Hall & Oates, They Might Be Giants) to
borderline un-karaoke-able experiments (Gertrude Stein, Steve Reich). The
program includes a dozen recent videos made by Roger Beebe, including
several premieres, as well as a roster of avant-garde all-stars including
Jesse Malmed, Bill Brown & Sabine Gruffat, Michael Robinson, Jeanne Liotta,
Matt McCormick, Bryan Boyce, and more. And yes, this is really karaoke, so
come prepared to sing!

*Experimentations 16: Unstable Ground: Science, Extraction, and Belief in
Monisme*
Many things collide in Riar Rizaldi’s *Monisme*: magic, science, indigenous
knowledge systems, violence, and a tenuous boundary between the past and
the future, fact and fiction. These all collide around Mount Merapi, one of
the most active stratovolcano in the world, located in Java, Indonesia.
*Monisme*’s multiple collisions ultimately illuminate the various
modalities of relation between humans and nature.

The screening will be followed by a panel with Riar Rizaldi, Fern Silva,
and Jheanelle Brown and by a free dinner. Curated by Jheanelle Brown.

*Monisme*, by Riar Rizaldi, Indonesia, Qatar, 2023, digital, color, sound,
115 minutes
