The Mona Lisa, a universal icon, becomes the subject of a reflection on the relationship between art, time and visual memory. Starting in 2000, Fanderl made a series of recordings inside the Louvre with her Super 8 film camera, observing the painting not only as a work of art, but also as a social phenomenon, amid the crowds of visitors and the incessant recording of images with all kinds of photographic and video equipment. The installation at Studio Tommaseo uses five 16mm projectors, twice the size of the original Super 8 format, to create a cinematic gallery of moving images that presents Leonardo’s painting in multiple variations. The images projected in a loop onto the walls recreate the presence of the work through time and the movement of visitors, marking both its permanence and its change. Fanderl’s work presents two types of gazes: that of the public, quick and often superficial, driven by curiosity and the desire to capture the image, and that of the artist, attentive, measured and delicate, capable of capturing gestures, details and nuances. The visitor to Monna Lisa, on view in Trieste until December 12, finds themselves at the centre of a dialogue between image, time, and perception: between the enigmatic gaze of the Mona Lisa and the photochemical density of Fanderl’s Super 8 films, each viewer is invited to reflect on the fragility and richness of vision, on the phenomenon of mass viewing, and on the memory of images. The installation thus becomes an immersive experience, in which classical art and cinematic experimentation enter a conversation, creating a space for observation and contemplation, where time, history, and technology intertwine. Helga Fanderl (Ingolstadt, 1947) lives and works in Berlin. She studied film with Peter Kubelka at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and with Robert Breer at the Cooper Union School of the Arts in New York. Since the mid-1980s she has made hundreds of Super 8 short films, presented in ephemeral montages that result in one-of-a-kind programs. Her work has been shown at numerous international festivals and is part of the collections of major museums, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2023, the volume Konstellationen Super 8 (Hatje Cantz) was published, which brings together the full breadth of her artistic work. *___________________________________________________________________* *December 3 - 7* Venue type: *Live, physical event* DOBRA <https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4b83d0e66f4638a082b103d27&id=97c7e605ca&e=857b71a9cb> Various times and locations, see link above Rio de Janeiro, Brazil *DOBRA International Festival of Experimental Cinema* DOBRA – International Festival of Experimental Cinema emerged ten years ago as a gathering of friends who shared their passion for experimental film. The Festival celebrates the latest achievements in abstract film, animation & new media, and recovers & contextualises great classics, providing a creative meeting point between artists and general audiences. It invites experimenters to take the genre's possibilities to the limit, and motivates new audiences to take an active role in the creative process. The World Festival for Abstract Art in Motion arrives in Sofia for the first time. From 3 to 7 December 2025, the ninth edition of Punto y Raya Festival will take place at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) and Cinema House, co-produced by MAD (ES), WFAF and NATFA (BG). The Official Competition presents 99 films from 37 countries, alongside a Student Competition featuring 31 films from 12 countries. Artists from around the world explore abstraction as a universal language, capable of generating unique perceptual and sensory experiences while pushing its limits and possibilities. The festival showcases both established pioneers and a new wave of experimental creators. *___________________________________________________________________* *December 4 - 6* Venue type: *Live, physical event* Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía <https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4b83d0e66f4638a082b103d27&id=4edcac365b&e=857b71a9cb> 19:00 (CET) daily, Santa Isabel, 52 28012, Madrid, Spain *Long Live L’Abo! Celluloid and Activism* This third installment of *The Commons of Cinema* , a research, programming, and publishing project dedicated to exploring how cinema articulates interpretive communities, fosters collective debate, and proposes solutions for the commons, presents L'Abominable, an independent film laboratory run by artists and filmmakers, founded in 1996 on the outskirts of Paris. The program is structured in three sessions: a lecture-workshop on L'Abominable led by filmmakers Pilar Monsell and Camilo Restrepo, a screening of 16mm short films produced at L'Abominable, and finally, a screening of the feature film *Une île et une nuit* [An Island and a Night], made by the collective Les Pirates des Lentilères. Known by the diminutive L'Abo, the artist-run lab was born in response to the disappearance of infrastructure for artisanal celluloid filmmaking. Its mission is to offer the creative community a self-managed space in which to produce, develop, and screen films in analog formats such as Super 8, 16mm, and 35mm. Based on this premise, L'Abominable promotes the aesthetic and political experimentation of analog cinema in the face of digital hegemony. More than just a working tool, L'Abominable has become a space for artistic and social exchange that has fostered a community. It is characterized, for example, by imbuing the technique with a poetic dimension, since the community itself creates its own film equipment. It also places pedagogy at its core, as filmmakers and artists train each other. Furthermore, it seeks an openness to all experimental languages surrounding celluloid, such as installation and performance art, while simultaneously serving as a place for the preservation and conservation of the history of this medium. L'Abominable is an example of how, in the digital age, artists and filmmakers are reclaiming cinematography and reclaiming the entire production process. This autonomy creates alternative paths to the industry, while simultaneously generating new tools, developing other forms of expression, and exploring uncharted territories of cinema. --- Thursday, December 4, 2025 at 7:30 PM --- Session 1. Chick Strand (1931-2009) was one of the founders of Canyon Cinema, who relocated to Los Angeles in the late 1960s and became one of the critical filmmakers and teachers of film in the region from then until her death. Opinionated, unruly, insightful, visionary, *Soft Fiction* is one of her masterworks, an extended semi-personal documentary incorporating several stories by women of sensual experiences they had had. Comprised of rare amateur travelogues shot by women between the 1920s-50s, *Terra Femme* is a live documentary by Courtney Stephens that weaves together questions of female authorship, cinematic excavation, and the Western gaze, complicating the freedoms these women experienced while traveling through foreign landscapes. Both films pursue an alternative notion of what has been called ethnographic film, rooted in the experiences of women, released from standard expectations of behavior, removing false notions of objectivity in their personal expressions of worldly experience. The films speak to one another across eras: women traveling the world in the first half of the twentieth century, through a feminist documentary lens of the late 1970s, to the insightful reflections of today. Please join us for this special evening, with *Soft Fiction* on 16mm and the now-uncommon live performance version of Stephens’s *Terra Femme*. *Soft Fiction*, By Chick Strand, 1979, 16mm, b&w, sound, 54 minutes *Terra Femme*, By Courtney Stephens, Live performance version, 2017-2021, digital, color, sound, 1 hour *SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2025* *December 13 - 15* Venue type: *Live, physical event* Anthology Film Archives <https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4b83d0e66f4638a082b103d27&id=99b273bfd8&e=857b71a9cb> times vary, see below, 32 Second Avenue, New York, NY *REFLECTIONS FROM A CINEMATIC CESSPOOL: GEORGE & MIKE KUCHAR* To celebrate the publication of a new edition of George and Mike Kuchar’s beloved memoir, “Reflections from a Cinematic Cesspool”, we gleefully present five programs of the twin brothers’ delightful and inimitable movies. Raised in the Bronx, George and Mike were 8mm filmmaking dynamos whose endless resourcefulness, sardonic style, and far out subject matter made them darlings of the 1960s underground. Working together and eventually apart, over the ensuing decades the Kuchars made hundreds of brazen and often deliriously campy films and videos that earned them global cult hero status. Where would the world be today without the Kuchars? It’s harrowing to think. First published in 1997, and long unavailable, “Reflections…” is both memoir and manifesto, an irreverent, hilarious, and deeply personal dispatch from two of the most beautifully deranged minds in independent film history. Back in print thanks to Inpatient Press, the book is a treasure trove of riotous stories and secrets about the Kuchars’ lives and careers. These screenings will focus on deep cuts from their seemingly bottomless oeuvre, with rarely screened 16mm films from each of the brothers, a program of new digital works by Mike, and more. It is a triptych. The film plays with our senses, toggling, with our consciousness as text itself communicates visually what is simultaneously heard, between linguistic languages we know and linguistic languages we do not speak. The rural and mountaineer landscapes activate various cultural phenomena that spur us into exploring landscapes and non-linearity, merging the lines between known and unknown future(s), past(s), and present(s). three sparks heightens the way our perception thinks about old laws, traditional gender relations, and various ways our presence as filmmakers and human beings is felt while making, and viewing, bodies full of worlds.– Diego Robles *three sparks* A non-fiction film/video by Naomi Uman, Mexico, Albania • 2023, color & b&w, 16mm/video, 93 min. The project begins by describing the filmmaker’s relationship to the country and an unwanted personal sacrifice which solidifies this connection. The film moves into a poetic portrayal of village life and the roles of women in society and concludes with a video piece, revealing the villagers' active participation in their own depiction. *ONGOING* Venue type: *Virtual, online event* Riverwest Radio <https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4b83d0e66f4638a082b103d27&id=36b414bf67&e=857b71a9cb> streaming 24/7 *THE LONG CONVERSATION* THE LONG CONVERSATION with Xav Leplae and Stephanie Barber is on indefinite hold.
