re the posts on Lucas and institutions supporting the avant-garde -
George Lucas, along with Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg are the founders of The Film Foundation, "dedicated to ensuring the survival of the American film heritage." The Film Foundation funds the Avant-Garde Masters Grants for film preservation, which are administered by The National Film Preservation Foundation.
These Avant-Garde Masters Grants (in decent amounts) have been awarded to Center for Visual Music, Anthology, UCLA Film Archive, Pacific Film Archive, Harvard Film Archive, MoMA, Eastman House, EAI, Temenos and others, to preserve films by Oskar Fischinger, the Kuchars, Bruce Conner, Kenneth Anger, Gregory Markopoulos, Hollis Frampton, Sidney Peterson, Stan Vanderbeek, Jonas Mekas, Abigail Child, and many more. The Film Foundation also funds directly to archives.
Looks like they've paid for the preservation of 15 Kuchar films, 5 Conner films, 4 Anger films, and many dozens more. Thanks George Lucas and friends!
best regards,
