Hi all,

Sorry, we forgot to post our show tomorrow night. If you are in Southern
California:

Los Angeles Filmforum is delighted to bring filmmaker Sarah J. Christman for
her first presentation in Los Angeles. Christman has been making a series of
superbly crafted and thoughtful essay films on the zones where humankind
manipulates nature in unexpected ways, affecting our memories, daydreams,
personal histories, and perceptions of the world. We'll have the Los Angeles
premieres of her films As Above, So Below (2012) and Broad Channel (2010),
along with one earlier film, Dear Bill Gates (2006). We think her works will
particularly appeal to those of you who like films by Thom Andersen and
Rebecca Baron - personal essay documentary filmmaking that stretches some
boundaries while making acute observations of the world.

Dear Bill Gates (2006, 16mm, 17 min.)
A simple correspondence evolves into a poetic visual essay exploring the
ownership of our visual history and culture. Combining original and archival
film, video and images from the internet, "Dear Bill Gates" draws unexpected
connections among mining, memory and Microsoft.
Selected Screenings: San Francisco International Film Festival (New Visions
Award), International Film Festival Rotterdam (Nominee, Tiger Award), Ann
Arbor Film Festival (Audience & Eileen Maitland Awards), Santa Cruz Film
Festival (Best Experimental Film)

Broad Channel (2010, 16mm, 14 min.)
Los Angeles premiere!
Over the course of four seasons, the nuances of everyday activity are
examined
along one narrow stretch of public shoreline in New York
City's Jamaica Bay. Moments of recurrence and change cycle through an
ecosystem rooted in migration.
Selected Screenings: Ann Arbor Film Festival (Jury Prize), Margaret Mead
Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, Berlin Director's Lounge

As Above, So Below (2012, 16mm, 50 min)
Los Angeles Premiere!
For thousands of years, alchemists toiled to synthesize rare substances and
universal cures, to manipulate the speed of natural processes. Today, a
woman has her husband's ashes transformed into a memorial diamond. Precious
metals are extracted from obsolete electronics. What was once the world's
largest landfill-- now also the final resting place of the World Trade
Center's remains-- is being converted into a public park. The film
intimately examines various transmutations, both microscopic and massive,
that reshape matter and its meanings. What separates the permanent from the
impermanent, the things we discard from those we preserve?
Screenings: Ann Arbor Film Festival (Jury Prize), Chicago Underground Film
Festival (Honorable Mention for Best Documentary Feature)

Sarah J. Christman makes non-fiction films that examine the intersection
between people, technology and the natural world. Her work has screened
widely at festivals such as Rotterdam, Ann Arbor, Antimatter, AFI FEST,
Chicago Underground, Margaret Mead, Oberhausen, PDX, and SXSW, among other
venues. Her films have received honors including Jury Awards from the Ann
Arbor Film Festival and the New Visions Award from the San Francisco
International Film Festival. A Philadelphia native, Christman received an
MFA in Film & Media Arts from Temple University and a BA from Oberlin
College. She lives in New York City, where she is an Assistant Professor in
the film department at Brooklyn College. She is currently working on a
project about circadian rhythm sleep disorders.
