Truely sad to hear that another iconic filmmaker has passed away.
Lawder was one of my heroes ever since I incidentally ran into a
screening of his CORRIDOR at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival way back
in 1971. This was the first film print that I ever bootlegged - quite an
expensive achievement in those days - but it brought hours of joy and
inspiration.
A few years ago I was lucky to be able to bring him to Germany, where he
screened a two-program-retrospective of his work at the European Media
Art Festival. We agreed that my little cottage label Red Avocado Film
should produce a DVD with his oevre. We produced a lengthy interview
film on the spot that was supposed to go on the DVD as a bonus. And
Lawder had a lot to tell considering he wrote THE CUBIST CINEMA, used to
be a professor at Yale and (for those interested) was the son-in-law of
Hans Richter. But after his return to the States and his move from
Denver to California he dropped out and in again on the emails about the
DVD production several times - and wouldn't even recognise me on the
phone or how far we had already come in negotiations. This state of his
health was immensely worrying, a fear that unfortunately was vindicated
with this sad news.
So no DVD as of today which is a shame considering the quality of his
films. Just this interview film that we may put up on our web site at a
ltaer stage.
RIP Standish!
