I have heard of doing the same thing on a steenbeck which I want to try. Steenbeck gives you a nice constant speed.

using low asa film stock yes, about 5-12asa. Make the room as dark as possible.

Does it help to leave just a small portion of the film exposed to light, covering the rest with dark cloth or such?
Were you satisfied with the results?

I did it with an enlargement lamp set over the synchronizer and a motorized rewind. I did tests, and alas so will you since there are numerous factors involved, the brightness of light, the speed of movement, film stock being used. This is a very complicated process in the beginning but you get good results for much less than a lab. Its a poor man's way of printing.

smoothly and evenly i guess... but how can you know if it got enough exposure? is there an optimal time per frame?
sorry for asking so many questions...

One can, at least I have, you need to bi pak raw stock with the film you want to print and shine a light on top of the synchronizer in a dark room and try to smoothly wind the film over the sprockets evenly. It takes practice, etc.

Best wishes,
