Thanks Adam, Russell and Andrew for your thoughts. My game plan from here:
1. Approach Linux Australia about accepting the domain lease for freesoftware.org.au and if willing retaining the DNS records. This is just preservation at this stage - I don't personally have plans or capacity for organising any events.
2. Convert the website to use a static site generator for ease of future hosting (currently a database-driven site). Doing this, rather than just taking an HTML archive, leaves the door open for future updates. I don't suppose anyone is an expert on Hugo or another non-JS static site generator? I can script an export of all blog entries and pages to Markdown.
3. Register an interim domain under my own name so the website remains accessible in the interim. freesoftwareaustralia.libre? freesoftware.au? I'll come up with something.

How long do we have before the domain expires?
Expires in October, though I got the impression that they wanted a non-profit ABN immediately to retain the lease. I'm not particularly outraged because that was always the expectation - they just never seemed to police it.
