Due to auDA rules, I would avoid .au for the reasons that are apparent and the 
grief you are already experiencing over this
issue.  If you cannot meet auDA rules at any time, then the domain name is at 
risk of being lost.

  name-au.[almost anything here that makes sense and follows their rules and 
isn't crazy expensive]

  - crazy expensive might be cheap offer in, then potential much higher cost 
later, once you are hooked.

  .com and .net should forever have sufficient competition that will ensure 
reasonable pricing

If .au was subject to the same rules as .com or .net, then it would be a no 
brainer to go .au for anything Australian based,
but sadly auDA rules can be a real pain point.
