I've always liked storing cache data in the user's home dir.. It's relatively easy to set up a cache system under, say, ~/.freeamp/ that mirrors the actual directory structure so that looking up meta info is as easy as concating the actual filepath to ~/.freeamp It's what I used in emusic for caching song info, and it worked pretty well..
