So (just to add fuel to the mass opposition), do this without 
temporary files:

  count=$(program | tee /dev/stderr | wc -l)
  exit $count

But then, you also said:

so I guess this could result in

  count=$(program |. cat | wc -l)
  exit $count

(substitute correct "|.*" syntax - whatever that is).
