FreeBSD installation problem

Hi i am trying to installed freeBSD 4.6. but on booting i keep on getting the message    F1    FreeBSD Default: F1 - i have read the FAQ's which say to put a small dos partition at the beginning of the drive but this has not worked. only giving a - (dash)  at startup. any suggestions would be most appreciable & thanks in advance  marc:-)
