I don't understand what you mean "on the way out" but I don't think the problem is lack of memory because I have 384MB in my machine.

But could my slicing have something to do with this thing. I have three HDDs in the machine a 3GB, 4GB and 6GB divided like this.
3GB /tmp 256MB /var 1024MB / 714MB /swap 1024MB
4GB /usr 4140MB
6GB /home 6356MB
