Ok, that's a step forward since I put your "startkde" item in my .xinitrc.
However, KDE said "unable to connect to X server" until I included
"X &".  It works but something is still amiss. There is no KDE splash
background
and it seems "kinda slow".

   ## .xinitrc
    X &
    exec startkde

    ## WindowMaker can be used instead of X & \ startkde ##
    #xclock -geometry 50x50-1-1 &
    #xdaemon2 -geometry +0-70 &
    #wmaker #no & here!        -BobMc-
