It scales much better than http and ftp under high demand. Download speeds with Bittorrent gets faster and then level-out, as a function of demand, which is the opposite of FTP. It's very well suited for software release ISOs where there's high demand for downloads immediately after a new release. With open source software it also benefits from a substantial amount of goodwill.
