ljet4 is the PCL5 driver, and anything with PCL6 is supposed to also support PCL5. I'd suggest trying both ljet4 and pxlmono or pxlcolor and going with whichever is faster.
However, I'd recommend that you take the time and install and configure CUPS.
If CUPS is desired, sure. For just plain printing, lpr/lpd is often easier to set up.
