Does your IT director understand the active/passive distinction? If not

From what he described his director is plain moron. He required him to
block things that HE needs to work, leaving port 80 open so things that are best in distracting from work (youtube, facebook...) works, as well as major virus source.

In places i work i was requested to

a) block some websites (facebook always first on list - very good).
b) block most things EXCEPT the ones needed for work, full access only for some people. So some ports and some targets do work, rest does not.

This is normal IMHO.
