It might be helpful to get a UNIX quick reference. O'Reilly makes one called "learning the unix operating system." Its a little book with basic commands in it.

If you decide to give up on freebsd, I would recommend buying that Macintosh. Mac OS X has BSD roots as they say. In fact, buying a Mac could help you learn Unix enough to give freebsd a try on that old x86 box. :)
