So it IS listening on 5901. Also:

Amongst other things, netstat -ab reports on the Windows machine:
TCP 127.0.0.1:7001 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 127.0.0.1:7002 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 127.0.0.1:7003 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
...which makes sense, since I'm getting through enough to trigger the error
on the FreeBSD system.
