I use postgresql (http://www.postgresql.org) for our in-house database containing millions of records, and Mysql (http://www.mysql.com) for web development.

Postgresql has great support for Triggers, rules, schemas, transactions, and stored procdures that can return result sets.

Good Luck,
Jason
