I use postgresql (http://www.postgresql.org) for our in-house database containing millions of records, and Mysql (http://www.mysql.com) for web development. It sound like sun microsystem and solaris 8, the binary is free (but for how long ?) and the support cost.
It isn't what I am looking for.

Postgresql has great support for Triggers, rules, schemas, transactions, and stored procdures that can return result sets.
