This might not be related to your problem but on my Radeon 7000 VE I had to disable DRI in the Modules section of the XF86Config to allow it to work above 15bit
Although my error messages where slightly different and my X would lockup rather than error out. Also noted you are using th ati driver. You might want to try the radeon driver as it might be more specific to your card.
