The upside of packages is someone else does all the work for you. You install the package, and you're done. The downside of packages is you get what someone decided should go in the package whether you need or want it. Maybe this doesn't matter; maybe you don't care about being told of potential security issues, or having 62 sub-modules that will never be used cluttering up the executable. At your level of experience, use the ports.
